Self Regulation and Co-Regulation

nervous system Aug 03, 2023

In times of intensity, overwhelm, and anxiety, self-regulation can be challenging. Often, we rely on co-regulation with others to find balance. If the people around us aren’t supportive in this aspect, seeking co-regulation from nature, like taking a walk or being near the ocean, can be helpful.

To achieve self-regulation, the key is orientation. When feeling anxious or overwhelmed, we seek orientation to return to the present moment. This allows us to process triggers from the environment and take time to rest and recover.

Co-regulation becomes crucial, especially when the family unit, a strong co-regulator, undergoes changes that can be disorienting. Understanding how our needs change and seeking relational co-regulation becomes important.

While self-regulation is possible, most of us thrive in relationships and gain a sense of self and power through connections with others.

Having a space to express ourselves and be heard by others is significant, as we can’t fully validate ourselves. Intensity, complexity, and simplicity play important roles in self-regulation and co-regulation.

Consciousness and awareness of bodily sensations are crucial in navigating the changing world, particularly with climate change impacting everything. Building a relationship with change and seeking support from the environment can lead to empowerment.

Fostering empowered self-regulation, co-regulation, and embracing change as a supportive force are essential for our relationship with the world and achieving empowerment.
