Image and Imagination Light the Way
Jul 11, 2023Image and imagination play a significant role in our perception. When we encounter an image, various parts of our brain are activated, and signals are sent throughout our nervous system. These images are connected to different associative networks, evoking sensations, emotions, and insights. It’s important to remember that everything we see is essentially an image.
Take a moment to look out the window. Notice the tree with its leaves. This is just one example of how our surroundings are composed of images. By developing a relationship with our senses and our felt experience of the environment, particularly the aspects that feel pleasurable and good, we can build resilience. This resourcefulness will support us during challenging and difficult times, which are an inherent part of life.
Unfortunately, we haven’t been trained to strategically use our senses, like a martial artist, in relation to our sensations. By anchoring ourselves in the present moment through our senses, we can better discern what feels good and what doesn’t. Additionally, we can process the world in smaller, manageable pieces, rather than overwhelming ourselves with large chunks.
Our development, much like the growth of a tree’s bud in spring, happens gradually and steadily. Nature’s constant growth and decay may seem fast, but it’s the continuous cycle of life. Similarly, we too experience growth and change, although we often resist the notion of death. Embracing the idea of our own death, whether it’s the death of thoughts, feelings, sensations, or even our physical selves, is essential to embracing the ebb and flow of our lives.
