Reflecting the light so you can see more clearly
Aug 08, 2023Often, we find ourselves connecting with criticism, uncomfortable feedback, or negative reinforcement. This kind of feedback points out what’s wrong with what we’re doing and how we can improve, and we’ve become accustomed to it. Receiving criticism has become normal because we have an inner critic that guides us.
On the other hand, receiving unconditional positive regard and genuinely appreciative feedback is not as familiar to us. It requires a different approach and can feel uncomfortable because it’s not something we often encounter. For some of us, especially depending on our cultural backgrounds, practicing this type of feedback may require considerable effort.
We must challenge ourselves to embrace this unfamiliar territory and practice sharing how we experience others positively. Expressing what moved us or what we enjoyed about someone is an essential skill, but it can be challenging because it’s easier to focus on what didn’t resonate or what we perceived as problematic.
However, shining light on the positive aspects, the insightful and beautiful elements, is equally important. It’s like looking at the other side of the coin – the side that is often overlooked. To do this, we need to hone our ability to recognize and appreciate the nuances in our interactions with others.
By acknowledging the value of positive feedback and consciously incorporating it into our interactions, we can create more meaningful and uplifting connections with others.
