What makes this workshop unique?
- The Art of Complex Acting
We will work on selected scenes from Chekhov’s great play ‘The Seagull’ . We will analyse the text in scrupulous detail and explore different approaches to the acting process, to work on how to bring the complex, often contradictory characters and their relationships to vivid, organic and meaningful life. It will be very much trying to get the participants to be in the present moment and in relationship with their scene partner.- Taught by Chris Edmund – An internationally recognized director, teacher, writer & painter with over 40 years experience. As Head of the Acting Department at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), he had a major role in developing the world renowned acting and directing training for over 25 years.
Find New Ways in Your Creative Process
“In my workshops and teaching, I try, in a supportive, creative atmosphere and environment, to explore the notions of truth and authenticity in the acting process. As people, we build up defences and armour to deal with life but success as an actor depends on being open, free, receptive and vulnerable. I believe that by allowing the valves of feeling to open, committing to scrupulous analysis of text for acting clues, being in relationship and close contact with one’s scene partner and allowing heart into the work can bring formidable and often unexpected results. I have had forty years of experience worldwide as a teacher and director and remain passionate and questing in my commitment to nurturing actors to develop and further their craft and evolve as dynamic, resourceful, skilled and successful artists.”

"A MASTER IN THE CRAFT OF DIRECTING"
"Chris Edmund is a master in the craft of directing. He creates a safe container for actors to play, explore, & collaborate…gracefully & elegantly inviting us into the unknown, like a magnificent sculptor, until the characters, story & piece itself are discovered and revealed. Chris’ process felt pure, energizing & expansive."
KATE WALSH
ACTRESS

''So much to take on board from this unbelievable experience!"
Mark Loughran
Actor

"Chris is a kind, patient and individual-oriented teacher. His versatility means there is no overarching ‘method’ as such - he provides an overview of the toolbox with precise, thorough direction to boot. In particular, Chris gave me a comprehensive understanding of Actioning and mirrored my progress back to me with depth and understanding. I would recommend him to any actor wishing to get detailed feedback and development from a consummate professional."
Sam McGovern
Actor

“Chris and Helena are without a doubt a powerful dynamic in the room. I love how they work with the actor in order to unlock the story within. So many of their teachings have given me such liberation! Text and story have now become notes that are played by the dance of the body. The best thing I can say is that I’ve found a journey within my body!”
Matheus Tonon
Actor

"I found the two-week intensive to be transformational with regard to my craft. Chris's script analysis coupled with Helena's neuro-systemic work created such a safe space for new discoveries and a more grounded, present experience whilst maintaining relationship within the scene. I would definitely recommend this duo and would have happily done many more weeks with them, given the chance. Each day was filled with so many new discoveries, I'm still trying to process it all."
Alex Conlon
Actor

''During a workshop with Chris I am never thinking of doing it right or wrong or worried that I am not good.
First of all (and not unimportantly) this is because Chris is very kind and nice which helps in feeling safe. Mostly though it is because that is not what the work is about. For me it was to see all the different ways the scene can go and all the different ways the work can be explored. It is great to work on a scene like this, and to then observe other people work with Chris, it is honestly like wizardry.
If you like to rediscover the power of play and the truth in performance, I would highly recommend working with Chris.''
Sarah Walsh
Actor

"Chris fosters an appreciation of good writing where every sentence is allowed to resonate and be responded to in a considered way. As a result, subtlety and nuance emerge naturally and colour one’s performance. Another feature of working with Chris is how a group dynamic that promotes play, exploration and discovery is developed. Interventions by Chris are always perceptive and timely. Even though different scenes are being explored there is a real sense of working as an ensemble that is genuinely transformative.”
Pádraic McGinley
Actor

“I cannot recommend Chris’s Workshop highly enough. Whatever an actors experience Chris will add to it. I found him kind in his approach to working with novices and professionals alike. He is a great guy and I look forward my next opportunity to learn from him."
Daniel Fitzgibbon
Actor

''Working with Chris has reignited my passion for theatre. His patience and kindness combined with his obvious love for what he does are so inspiring and it was a joy to learn from him. I have come away from class with a renewed clarity about how to approach a text and an arsenal of tools to help me in future auditions and rehearsals."

- Chris will cast you in scenes from Chekhov’s great play ‘The Seagull’ for you to prepare before the workshop. The scenes offer different challenges in both form and content and show how different texts require different approaches in terms of your preparation as an actor to bring them to meaningful life.
- You will be working with a scene partner, so you can contact each other before we meet in the room to discuss and examine the scene., so that you can bring ideas and insights to the texts, then Chris can offer alternative ways of approaching and evolving the work.
- Chris is very process, rather than product oriented and hope to extend and, in a supportive environment, to challenge and extend your understanding of the fusion of rigorous examination of text, coupled with emotional release and inhabiting the art of the present moment
